If you’ve been dealing with burning or tingling feet, numbness in your hands, or shooting nerve pain that seems to come out of nowhere, you may be living with peripheral neuropathy — and you’re far from alone.
Millions of Americans experience neuropathy, yet many are told there’s little to be done beyond managing symptoms with medication. At Brooklyn Spine Center, we disagree. Our team has been helping Brooklyn patients find meaningful, drug-free relief from neuropathy for decades.
What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord — collectively called the peripheral nervous system — become damaged or dysfunctional. These nerves carry signals for sensation, movement, and organ function between the brain and the rest of the body.
When they’re compromised, the signals get scrambled. That’s what produces the hallmark symptoms:
- Burning or tingling sensations in the feet or hands
- Numbness or the feeling that a limb is “asleep”
- Sharp, shooting, or electric-like pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Muscle weakness or difficulty with coordination
- Loss of balance, especially in low light
Neuropathy is also closely tied to nervous system stress — a pattern of cumulative dysfunction that affects how the entire nervous system regulates the body.
What Causes Neuropathy?
Neuropathy has many potential root causes. The most common include:
- Diabetes (diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the leading cause)
- Chemotherapy side effects
- Spinal compression or nerve entrapment
- Autoimmune conditions
- Nutritional deficiencies (especially B12)
- Chronic infections or inflammatory conditions
- Prolonged alcohol use
In some cases, the cause is idiopathic — meaning no clear origin can be identified. But regardless of cause, the nerve damage and symptoms are real, and they respond to treatment.
Why Medication Alone Often Isn’t Enough
The conventional approach to neuropathy typically involves medications like gabapentin, pregabalin, or duloxetine. While these can reduce the sensation of pain, they don’t repair the underlying nerve damage — and they come with significant side effects including fatigue, cognitive fog, and dependency risk.
Many of our patients come to us specifically because they want an approach that goes beyond symptom management. They want to give their nerves a real chance to heal.
Our Approach to Neuropathy Relief
At Brooklyn Spine Center, our neuropathy relief program is built around therapies that promote nerve regeneration, restore circulation, and reduce the inflammation driving nerve damage.
PEMF Therapy for Nerve Regeneration
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy (PEMF) has a compelling evidence base for neuropathy. By delivering low-frequency electromagnetic pulses to damaged nerve tissue, PEMF therapy stimulates cellular repair, improves blood flow to peripheral nerves, and can significantly reduce the burning and tingling sensations associated with neuropathy.
Cold Laser Therapy
Low-level laser (cold laser therapy) uses specific light wavelengths to penetrate tissue and stimulate mitochondrial activity in nerve cells. This promotes the energy production nerves need to repair and regenerate. It’s non-invasive, painless, and has shown promising results for patients with diabetic and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy.
Chiropractic Adjustments
Spinal misalignments can compress nerve roots and reduce the quality of nerve signals throughout the body. Chiropractic adjustments remove this interference, allowing the nervous system to function more effectively and creating a better environment for healing.
Shockwave Therapy
For patients whose neuropathy is accompanied by chronic soft tissue pain or circulatory issues in the lower extremities, shockwave therapy can stimulate blood vessel formation and tissue repair, improving the vascular environment that peripheral nerves depend on.
Meet Our Team
Our team of experienced chiropractors — including Dr. Melinda Keller, who has over 32 years of experience and is a recognized neuropathy specialist — brings a depth of clinical knowledge that most general practices simply don’t have. We understand the complexity of nerve conditions and treat each patient as an individual, not a diagnosis.
You Have More Options Than You Think
A diagnosis of neuropathy doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of medication and declining function. Many of our patients have experienced dramatic improvement in their symptoms after just weeks of treatment — and some have achieved lasting relief they didn’t think was possible.
